Polynesian Princess

Yesterday I set up one of the most visually effective cakes I have done!
Even from 15m across the room- tis cake stood out!
Yesterday afternoon My husband and I arrived at the East Leagues club to set up a 21st cake, for a lovely girl. Not only was she lovely (and beautiful) her mother and sister were wonderful people too.
I first met with them all late last year, and after meeting them, and learning about some of the customs surrounding this auspicious occasion- I was delighted to be apart of this celebration.

Having a Polynesian heritage, we used this theme to create the show stopping design!
Polonia's (Birthday girl) sister is a great artist- still only a teenager herself- her artwork is incredible. She drew some beautiful patterns that were banded around each cake. The carefully drawn and scaled patterns were wrapped around the cake- made from Printed icing. The first run of the prints weren't successful- but after having the drawings reprinted at another supplier- they turned out just perfect!

With the weather this week once again being both wet and humid- the challenge to work with the delicate printed icing- to finish this design was challenging.

A miniature three tiered cake (all of the cakes are handed out to the guests as a matter of ceremonial importance) Stood tall on top of the tower of individual cakes. There were three different patterns, each representing the three different flavours inside. Chocolate Mud, White Mud and Marble Mud- filled both the three tier and the miniature cakes.
Set onto a stand, that had three levels of mini cakes, plus the top tier, this cake stood over 65cm Tall! The symmetry of the patterns and the mini cakes even drew the chefs out if the kitchen for a sneak peek!

My Husband made sure every cake was in line, and perfectly spaced out on the stand too! Whilst he towers over tis design- I must tell you he stands at 197cm tall!

Personalised balloons filled the room- so the Gold, white, black and Brown theme was complete.

The Function coordinator at the venue was definately worth a mention. He was so friendly, genuine and helpful- something that is often forgotten in this industry! I hope I get to work with him again!

So here's wishing Polonia a Fantastic 21st Birthday! I hope you had a blast!

Short and Sweet!

Yesterday was My husband's birthday. And whilst he didn't have any specific cake requests (or at least reasonable ones) I decided to make him mini cupcakes!
Luckily I found a box that fitted perfectly the design I had in mind. Mini vanilla cupcakes, iced in ganache, then iced in a thin layer of bright coloured plastic icing!
When I finished the design my first thought was that they looked like pool (snooker) balls- the comment was also resonated by a friend of mine too!
Cute and Simple- and Extremely Yummy (if I do say so myself!!).

Remember to Vote for your Favourite design of 2007!

Past and Present

This week had me preparing a cake and a topper for previous clients.
It is always wonderful to be able to make cakes for repeat clients, and both of the return customers this week have returned more than once!
Firstly I made this little fairy for a 1st birthday cake. Although I didn't make the actual cake- I did replicate the fairy from the invitation design- so that everything matched.

Then I had the privilege of making a beautiful christening cake for one of my past wedding clients. This cake had gorgeous tiny little rose buds over the cake- it was so pretty.

Then a strange coincidence occured- This week I had two clients called Tiffany/Tiffanee. Whilst one was celebrating her wedding- the other was holding a lavish "Oscars after Party" and wanted individual "Tiffany" boxes as her cake.

The latte coloured cakes with black sugar bows were surrounded by fresh flowers and ivy. Rich and Romantic in design.

The heat today was sent to test me for sure. Summer is certainly here- and with everything becoming super delicate it really makes me appreciate the coll- non humid winter weather!

The Rains are comiing........

This weekend was another hectic one! I had deliveries today that led me on a journey of over 250km!

Starting out at Glengariff this morning, and ending up at Gilhooley's Chermside late this afternoon.
As I was driving out to Glengariff- the weather was fine and clear, but the forecast said there would be a storm in the afternoon. With the skies slightly overcast- it seemed a vague possibility.

The first delivery of the day- A three tier twist on tradition, with the base two tiers stacked American style, and the top tier separated by a column pillar- all iced to match the cake design. Blood red fresh roses to finish.

It took me four runs to deliver all the cakes today- but with very little traffic about- we delivered them all ahead of schedule.
As we dropped off the last order- at 4pm- the skies were growing darker, and not more than five minutes after getting home, the rain and hail fell, as the thunder rumbled in the skies! Thank goodness all of the cakes were on their respective tables, out of the rain!

Middle of the Delivery run- this Cherry Blossom Design suited the theming perfectly. Two weeks in a row for Cherry Blossom Cakes- this theme must be in!

I got to visit a few places I haven't been before- including the Maritime Museum, which holds functions in its grounds, on the banks of the Brisbane river. I would have never thought to have a function there- but the view from the venue was just fabulous.

I also finally got to meet in person Dominique- from Brett's Wharf.
She, and the team at Brett's Wharf, look after the functions there. I have only ever spoken to her on the phone, or via email- so it is always great when you get to meet someone face to face.

With a fair mixture of Traditional, contemporary, and Cupcake designs, this week was creatively fulfilling!
Wishing everyone a fantastic night ahead- BTW the skies are clear again!

Last but not least- this Cupcake tower- filled with Vanilla Cupcakes iced in pink icing, with a "Bling" Chocolate 21 on top! Simple and Pretty!

Awesome Job!

Tonight was cause for celebration- My very good friend Paula, was celebrating her belated ?th Birthday and we were also celebrating her daughter Riley's fourth Birthday!
So when I arrived at their house to see the awesome job that Paula had done of Riley's cake- I was blown away- not to mention how excited Riley was that it was her birthday- and what a fantastic cake she had!!!
For some crazy reason Paula- who has known me for many years- was worried what I would think- but the cake speaks for itself!
This two tier cake, was iced in coloured rolled fondant, decorated with fruit sticks around the outside ( the dark pink ones are the best!!) Paula then- very cleverly- made decorations from royal icing- that had a fantastic sheen!
To be fair to all you home decorators out there- Paula is a Chef too!
So Congratulations- once again you have outdone yourself!

I think this is the hurry up and light the candles look- so we can eat cake!!!
Happy Birthday Riley!!
Back pack Back pack back pack back pack...... Can't get it out of my head!

All about Birthdays!

It isn't that often that I have the opportunity to make birthday cakes- often because I am well and truly booked out- by the time I get an inquiry. But this week I had a beautiful 16th Birthday Cupcake tree to make for Lauren! Celebrating this milestone was done in style- at the Stamford Plaza hotel. Each little cupcake was filled with white chocolate and Macadamia mud cake, topped with a vanilla butter cream, and sugar frangipani.

This next "Retro Bug" design was created for a great and long time friend of my brother and sister in law- Nicole! She is soon to have a baby, and this cake was for her baby shower!
Gone are the pale muted colours, and teddy bears- with Nicole Loving "retro" style, this cake had a tri-colour scheme, and funky circles to cover the cake. A cute little caterpillar bug on top to finish it all off!

This weekend has been fantastic! Gorgeous cakes, and a Wedding to attend- More on that Later!- along with a magazine photo shoot! It is all going too quickly!
Toomorrow brings my first Monday Wedding- so its back to business for me!

Weddings Parties- Anything!

This past week bought me much diversity in my cake making!
From Classical wedding cake designs through to corporate and Birthday cakes- made for an artistically challenging week!
I traveled to Sydney with the "chainsaw" cake- to celebrate my Uncles 40th Birthday! After much security checking, and curious onlookers, I made the trip safely to Sydney with the cake!
It is great to be able to create cakes which are so much fun- and really get guests talking!
The cake is entirely edible- including the saw part- and when I went through airport security the guards there were very curious as to how it was all constructed- so in true form- I held up the waiting passengers at Brisbane Airport whilst I tried to explain-quickly- how I managed to make the whole cake from sugar- to curious people who had never decorated a cake before! It really wasn't an easy feat!
I then again spent much time with fellow party goers- explaining the ins and outs of cake decorating! At least I love to talk!
The cake was a surprise for my Uncle- he knew I would bring a cake- but he certainly didn't expect a chainsaw to arrive from Brisvegas! His job is what prompted the unusual design- which he seemed to really love!
I enjoy seeing peoples reactions and cutting the cake just as much as I do enjoy the finished product. It isn't often that I actually get to see one of my designs being cut- or get to talk with guests, and hear their thoughts first hand. Suffice to say the cake ( white Chocolate and Raspberry mud cake inside) was gobbled up as fast as I could cut it!

This week brings a lot of weddings for the long weekend! until then.... Have a great time!
